Providence Surgical Simulation Program (PSSP)
Much of our work is performed in the laboratory setting where we hold hands-on technique courses, work on device and technique development and where we train our fellows and interns. An important collaboration with the Providence Surgical Simulation Program (PSSP) began in 2016 to further this work. By combining our resources, FSIE and Providence have created a state of the art, fully equipped simulation center for laparoscopic surgery and flexible endoscopy in the PSSP laboratory. Located on the Providence Portland Medical Center campus in Portland, the PSSP provides an environment for practicing surgeons, surgical residents and other interventional professionals to acquire and maintain surgical skills competency. As part of the mission, PSSP also provides an environment for critical assessment of patient safety and quality assurance issues.
PSSP has the most advanced endoscopic surgical virtual reality testing equipment available
Funded jointly through FSIE and Providence, PSSP is recognized nationally as an official SAGES Fundamentals for Endoscopic Surgery Test Center (http://www.fesprogram.org). In accordance with this advanced program, PSSP houses the most advanced endoscopic surgical virtual reality testing equipment available. The GI Mentor (http://simbionix.com/simulators/gi-mentor/) simulator provides multiple training opportunities with realistic scenarios of clinical situations, ranging from simple diagnostic procedures to advanced interventional ERCP, Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and bronchoscopy procedures. The GI Mentor software includes a comprehensive library of modules with more than 120 tasks and virtual patient cases that can be tailored to the needs of Providence providers through the PSSP.

Cutting edge surgical technique research
FSIE researchers perform cutting edge surgical technique research in the PSSP laboratory and collaborate to host various educational courses throughout the year. In addition, we are currently working to develop multiple new educational opportunities with programs for surgical technicians, certified first assistants and operative physician assistants. |
