NOTES Fellowship
FSIE also partners with the Providence Cancer Center to provide a funded NOTES research fellowship. The initial NOTES Research Fellowship was developed in 2007 as a 1-2 year position to support a full time graduate surgeon in pursuit of advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques with a specific focus on flexible endoscopy and laparoscopy. The NOTES Fellowship was designed to capitalize on the longstanding translational research efforts of the GI/MIS program in the rapidly evolving field of surgical endoscopy and so called incisionless surgery or NOTES under the mentorship of the faculty of the Foundation for Surgical Innovation and Education.
The Fellowship is intended to bring a fully trained surgeon (laparoscopy and flexible endoscopy) to a new level of competence in highly complex interventional endoscopic surgeries and to improve patient care. Considering the nascent state of NOTES this is primarily a research experience . The Fellow will conduct original research in 3 primary areas: technology development, interventional procedure design and assessment and human factors (education design).
The research is intended to produce academic results as well as further development of enabling devices and procedures to further the field of surgery. All research is intended to be translational and the Fellow will participate in the design and conduct of human trials as they come increasingly on line.
The Fellow is expected to graduate with an unparalleled expertise and knowledge of NOTES, interventional endoscopy and available technologies, which should enable the Fellow to establish a similar program at his/her parent institution. This 1 to 2 year postgraduate experience is structured according to the “Guidelines for a high-quality postgraduate Fellowship” [published at fellowshipcouncil.org].
Requirements for appointment:
The Fellow applicant should be a fully trained US general surgeon, licensed and accredited, with experience in laparoscopic surgery and interventional flexible endoscopy. As this is designed as a research fellowship, funding is not available for clinical credentialing. Information for self funding a hands on clinical experience is available.
Job description:
A 1-2 year education opportunity designed to both enlarge the frontiers of surgical endoscopy and teach mastery of the skills and knowledge of NOTES and surgical endoscopy in a postgraduate Fellow. The Fellow will be a full time employee of the Providence Health System within the Providence Cancer Center, with all the rights and responsibilities that entails. The Fellow’s supervision will be from the Director of Cancer Clinical Programs for hospital and administrative functions and from the Director of Surgical Oncology and, in turn, the Fellowship Program Director for all clinical and fellowship duties. Compensation and benefits are consistent with institutional guidelines for a PGY 6.
