Ahmed Sharata, MD
FSIE Laboratory Coordinator 2011-2017
Ahmed Sharata MD was born and raised on an olive farm in Libya. After graduating from the University of Tripoli, Dr. Sharata earned his medical degree from University of Tripoli Faculty of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at Tripoli Central Hospital where he honored International Scholarship for high medical education and training. Dr Sharata came to the US in 2010 with the intention of gaining additional surgical education and experience to bring back to his homeland through a grant sponsored by the Libyan embassy. However, this plan was quickly derailed as the Libyan war commenced at home. With his funding cut off and his medical school closed so he could not access his credentials, Dr Sharata joined FSIE as a post-graduate research intern in 2011 and was quickly promoted to clinical research fellow with an emphasis in advanced endoscopic surgery. His research interests include diseases of the foregut, surgical instrument innovation, endolumenal therapies and surgical education. During his time with FSIE, Dr. Sharata has been incredibly productive including authoring more than 25 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters. He has built a strong reputation during his numerous national and international presentations at surgical society meetings. In his free time, Dr Sharata recently took up skydiving.
